Deputy Minister for Population and Family Development (Wamendukbangga) Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka has emphasized the importance of parents staying updated on their children’s interests and engaging in physical activities together to prevent addiction to games and gadgets. Speaking at a discussion organized by the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) and Gempita, Isyana highlighted the need for parents to continuously upgrade themselves and be familiar with current online applications to keep pace with their children’s learning. She pointed out that children often seek instant gratification from social media and online games, leading to potential addiction issues.
To address this concern, Isyana suggested that engaging in sports and outdoor activities can provide a healthy alternative to fulfill the need for dopamine, as emphasized by Veronica Tan, Deputy Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection. Tan introduced the Ruang Bersama Indonesia (RBI) program as a safe and inclusive space for women, children, and communities to empower themselves, learn, play, and nurture creativity. Through RBI, children have access to creative spaces, traditional games, sports activities, and are encouraged to steer clear of excessive gadget use.
The initiatives presented by Isyana and Tan aim to promote a balanced lifestyle among children and reduce the risk of addiction to games and gadgets. By fostering an environment that encourages physical activities, creativity, and engagement with traditional games, parents can help their children avoid the pitfalls of excessive screen time and stay active and healthy.
