Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, shared that President Prabowo Subianto was actively involved in negotiations for trade tariff revisions following U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement. Airlangga mentioned that President Prabowo was quick to respond to Trump’s declaration, instructing the team to send a formal letter to the White House. Indonesia was the first country to officially respond to Washington, D.C. after Trump’s tariff announcement. Airlangga also highlighted that while the negotiation team was engaged in trade discussions with the OECD and IEU-CEPA, President Prabowo directed the development of a tailored trade package for the U.S., referred to as a “menu.” The goal was to address key trade components and create a balanced proposal. The reduction of Indonesia’s export tariffs to the U.S. from 32% to 19% was attributed to Indonesia’s compliant trade documentation and package. Airlangga confirmed meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and emphasized Indonesia’s responsiveness and compliance during the negotiation process. The phone call between Presidents Prabowo and Trump played a pivotal role in finalizing the deal. Ultimately, both presidents agreed on the tariff reduction to 19% during the call. This negotiation marked a significant achievement, with both countries considering the matter resolved based on the discussions and decisions made at the presidential level.
