Hyundai Santa Cruz pick-up truck made its debut in the US in 2021, providing a solid alternative to the Ford Maverick. While not a traditional pick-up truck, it bears more resemblance to a Tucson with a bed. Recently, Hyundai confirmed the production of a truly capable pick-up truck, although it may not be available in America.
Hyundai Australia’s CEO, Don Romano, revealed that the company is working on a new mid-size ute – a pick-up truck. This vehicle will compete with body-on-frame alternatives in the region such as the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, and its cousin, the Kia Tasman.
Romano mentioned in an interview, “I am confident that a ute will be in the pipeline, but I am unsure about the timing. It will depend on the type of ute we develop. If we use a body-on-frame platform like the Tasman, it could happen sooner.”
Details are still unclear, and it remains uncertain what will power this pick-up truck. Romano hinted at diesel, hybrid, and even full electric options. Due to Australia’s stringent emission regulations, sharing a platform with the Tasman seems unlikely. However, Hyundai could turn to General Motors for assistance, as they recently signed a deal for joint production of trucks and vans.
“Our goal is to keep looking ahead, and we have a strategic alliance with GM, not just with electric vehicles. We want to have a range of options, and GM is part of that,” Romano stated in the interview.
Hyundai aims to produce its new pick-up truck in Australia within the next three years. As for the Santa Cruz, no significant changes are expected for this compact pick-up truck in the US, as it has just received a minor refreshment.
